Daily Candy snapped photos of stylish ladies and gents from Chicago and beyond for their 2013 Street Style Awards. They're pitting us against New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco and inviting readers to vote for their favorite city. The story features designers, photographers, writers, lawyers, boutique owners, and dozens more people doing and creating cool things around the country. A few weeks ago, an editor from Refinery29 reached out to ask if I would style my siblings for a feature on Wild Belle that ran today in their Musical Muse series. Natalie and Elliot both have a distinct eye for fashion and have acquired some amazing pieces over the years, so they don't need too much help in the styling department. But, I was more than happy to oblige and took this as a fun opportunity to enlist some of my favorite local designers and boutiques in order to find some special pieces to pair with their own well-worn and well-loved items.

I usually try and shy away from major trends when I am designing pieces for the collection. But, every once in a while I'm tempted to find a fun way to incorporate the season's colors and materials into the line. One quick and satisfying way for me to experiment with that is by making accessories. This season, we're seeing loads of neon and chunky statement jewelry made with all sorts of rope and nylon cord. I spent some time a few weeks back playing around with materials and putting my own touches on those trends. Here are the results. These first two have been claimed, but I'm kind of excited about them, so think I'll make a handful more and bring them to the store in the coming weeks.

Mineralogy is a recently-launched jewelry brand designed by Theresa Cowan, a very sweet and very talented graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She uses rough cut stones and vintage brass findings to create a collection that is just the right mix of organic and elegant. We started carrying the line at Roslyn a few months back and I've been admiring the pieces and using them to accessorize my dresses around the shop ever since. I've decided it is time to stop ogling and actually get something for myself. But, I still can't figure out exactly which one I want to take home. Help!

birthday bounty

My older brother and I happen to have birthdays that are two days apart. Last weekend he turned 30 and I turned 27 and it was one of our best joint celebrations yet. I felt that big 3-0 deserved some recognition and used his birthday as an excuse to throw a fun summer soirée at the house where we grew up a little outside of Chicago. Since I love to cook and entertain, preparing a bunch of good food and hanging out with family and friends was the perfect way to spend my birthday weekend.

My actual birthday was a pretty low-key day full of some work and visits with friends. I made a skirt, met with one of my seamstresses and a friend working on an exciting new sewing project, ate a few too many cookies (some delicious homemade fig and walnut cookies from my sister and an extra large  frosted one from Sweet Mandy B's), jumpstarted a car, and got locked out of my house (which was followed by borrowing a ladder from the neighbor and climbing in one of my windows). Thankfully, my plans for the day didn't involve too much other than spending time around the house, so the unexpected adventures made the day a little more exciting and enjoyable.

I feel so touched by the love, generosity, and creativity of my family and friends. In addition to being incredibly grateful for the wonderful people in my life, I am totally excited about all of my sweet presents! A girl could not ask for a better birthday.

{ one } A lovely diamond wedding band that belonged to Collin's great-great-aunt and was passed down to his mom and now to me. I cried when I opened this. It is such a special gift. The design is timeless and the box it came in is super cool. This ring has been very well cared for and I plan to do the same.

{ two } A wood block for printing. It is so pretty that I almost don't want to get it dirty with ink. Alas, my curiosity about how the design looks on fabric will most likely lead to some printing experiments.
